About
Cheryl Quejada Canning is a Sydney based visual artist of Ilocano and Tagalog heritage who works under the pseudonym Ningjada. She has been living with a chronic illness that affects her sense of touch and sight. Through art Cheryl is able to practice self-compassion and live a better life. Central to her work is a deep exploration of the subconscious, through art making. Art is an expression of our thoughts, emotions, intuitions, and desires, but it is even more personal than that, it’s about sharing the way we experience the world, which for many is an extension of personality. It is the communication of intimate concepts that cannot be faithfully portrayed by words alone.
She explores different techniques and mediums as a means of expression. The colors she uses are randomly chosen so each day she has a different palette of colors. The process of each creation has a set parameter - different palette of colors, new creativities, spontaneity mindset and the art area which the artist believe contributes to making each art pieces unique in itself. Cheryl’s work have been exhibited both in Australia and the Philippines. She holds a degree in Business Banking and Finance from MS Enverga University, Philippines , Diploma in Visual Arts at St George College of Finearts, Sydney and Advanced Diploma in Visual Arts at Meadowbank TAFE , Sydney. Cheryl also repurposes found and recycled materials as a canvas to present conceptual and structural elements of her works. She draws her inspiration from learned values, reaction to lived experiences and perception of societal realities.
She does all these things to convey a message that art is more than a decoration, art breathes life into a space and serves as a reminder of our own humanity. As Jordan Peterson said, “ Art speaks of the ultimate depths, it brings it into your house.”
